  1. To be sure, the birth of a child brings joy, but how is that incomparable with other sources of utility? People consciously make tradeoffs between having children and having more money for such things as vacations. And I wouldn’t say they have made the wrong tradeoff, if it would be their seventh baby and they can’t afford to own a car.
